i find meaning, power and delight in all things handmade and human in an era where digital technology has become pervasive. i work in painting, mixed media collage and printmaking. commemorative portraiture is a central pillar of my work these days. i am passionate about visual archiving and creating work that honors the sacred in our lives and stories.
my portraits are a celebration of ancestors, loved ones, families, couples, yourself, your children, a moment in time, a story, a sentiment, a prayer, an affirmation or aspiration. my intention is to create art that is both meaningful and healing. paintings that become altars or doorways. paintings that play and delight.
i was born from a Black american father and a white mother of western european ancestry. i honor Black ways, art, music and aesthetics as my cultural home and deepest influence. transformation, connection, motherhood, death, birth, eternality vs. ephemera, liminality, hybridity, remembrance, transcendence, reconciliation, growth, grief, joy and the sacred are the themes i am exploring in my work. culturally and aesthetically, my paintings are in conversation with street art, cartoons, drawing, doodles, collage, hip hop, jazz, soul music, and all the private sketchbooks of artists too shy to share. these are the art forms that have been intimately woven into my life since early childhood.
i make work using acrylic, ink, spray paint, chalk, photographs, found objects, wood, collected papers, fabrics, textiles and lino printing. all works on my site were primed, painted, re-painted, collaged, sanded, sewn, layered, scraped, pressed, cut, sprayed, printed, painted again, dried, revised, varnished + framed by my hands; nothing here is digitally created.
